HIPPIE DAYS
When even Milan's foremost purveyor of sex appeal, Roberto Cavalli, is showing lace frocks over fringed pants and needlepoint-inspired florals, it's clear a revolution is underway. But this time around, it's not about The Establishment—it's about gorgeous fashion.
The Nouveau Hippie movement has hit Milan, and Cavalli is one among many who are feeling the free love with long, natural locks and psychedelic prints. Etro also paid homage to the summer of love with shrunken vests, low-slung belts, and fringed boots that left toes exposed, emulating the barefoot bliss of the bohemian generation. At Missoni, the trend was tweaked for a thoroughly modern feel, with earthy prints appearing on luxurious silks and long layers of necklaces that looked far richer than any traditional hippie beads. Signs of the trend have also been spotted at Pucci, Matthew Williamson, and D&G. How completely groovy.
