PURPLE HAZE

Not since Prince hit the stage in 1984 to praise purple rain have varying shades of violet, eggplant, and aubergine held so much allure. As the first few days of New York Fashion Week shows came to a close, it became clear designers are giving this season the royal treatment.

At Costello Tagliapietra, a knee-length silk skirt in a true grape hue was the standout of a monochrome ensemble, while silver accents brought out the true depth in another plum look. The return of Herve Leger meant more body-clinging silhouettes than ever, especially effective in a bandage halter dress in a steely amethyst shade.

Jeremy Laing's futuristic prints were a study in violet done right, particularly when paired with simple black tights and shoes. Erin Fetherston, Nicole Miller, and Yigal Azrouel all saw fall through a bit of a purple haze, as well.
