“Everything I liked was on the other side of the water,” Coco Chanel once confessed in reference to England. And so on Thursday, Karl Lagerfeld obliged her wishes by bringing her label's pre-fall ready-to-wear collection, “Métiers d'Art,” across the pond.The show, held at the Phillips de Pury & Co. headquarters in London, was sandwiched between a star-studded welcome dinner, an equally glittering after-party, and a fleet of Chanel-embossed black taxis shuttling around guests like Kate Moss, Tom Ford, Naomi Campbell, Lily Allen, and Rinko Kikuchi.
Irina Lazareanu and Sean Lennon provided the runway-side soundtrack, while Agyness Deyn, Freja Beha, and Iekeliene Stange showed off a very London-inspired mix of sophisticated punk clothes, punctuated by tweeds, leather, and the occasional ruffle.
Chanel had already left quite a mark on London—her former lover, the Duke of Westminster, reportedly engraved the city's lampposts with interlocking Cs to prove his love for her—but this week's festivities should help confirm the designer's lasting impression.
