No shoe in history has embodied the independent spirit quite like Dr. Martens—Kurt Cobain and Joe Strummer were rarely seen without them, Claire Danes sported a pair as an angsty teen in My So-Called Life, and now, the ever-conceptual Yohji Yamamoto is taking on his own version of the iconic boot.The limited-edition collection hits stores this week and employs some understated fashion-forward tweaks. The classic 10-eye boot gets updated with a pointed toe and Yohji monogram, a crackled leather finish, and a hidden side zipper.
The runway models in his fall show wore them with leather jackets, hoop skirts, and cigarette pants, but in the spirit of Docs, we say you can wear them any old way you like.
